I don’t mind a few abbreviations in Twitter… after all, sometimes even I’m pushing the 140 barrier, and I’m the King of Brevity. (No, not really.)

By the way, did you know that 140 characters isn’t actually the limit on Twitter? 255 is. The message will be cut off in your Twitter stream, but the rest will show if they click the specific link for that message. (That was my Trivia Of The Day for you.)

Anyway, back to the topic. Even worse is is loose vs lose. That just drives me nuts!

Still, I try not to loose sleep over these things.

I’d say FAQs was acceptable, simply because it’s common usage — although I agree your logic is impeccable.

That’s a good one – it’s probably because the opposite is true in fiction. Ever read any Michael Crichton? Jurassic Park is comical when it comes to dialogue:

“Oh dear!” Said the man loudly. “It’s going to eat us!”

Why couldn’t he have shouted?

Inexperienced writers who think it’s a good idea to use different words for “said” when quoting someone in an article.

In my last internal comms job I was always reading about people who had “commented”, “noted” or “observed”.

Aargh!!! They’re not synonyms for “said” and they detract from the quote – don’t do it!!!
