That's true. It sometimes surprises me that a post will be debated on Twitter for hours, and sometimes attract just a handful of comments.

I guess the conversation's just been moved on.

Great stuff. How the hell did I miss this when you published?

What also interests me is how lots of commenting has gone to other places, particularly Twitter and to a lesser extent Facebook.

When I started blogging in about 2003/4, there were much stronger ecosystems of people who read and commented on each other's blogs. Those are much weaker now, but on the plus side Social Media is pointing us to shed loads more blogs we really want to read.

Hi all,
It is funny to see this today. Just yesterday I sent an email with my words twisted badly enough I worry I have dementia. It was that bad! The saving grace is that I sent the note to a dear friend. The scary part is God knows how many opportunities I have lost because of such sloppiness.

WE ARE WRITERS. We need to present ourself as professionals. Quality counts! And every time I make these mistakes, I cringe. Why? Because I know my readers are relatively educated. They are normal people, not picky editors.

If your readers graduated from high school, and most have, then they are usually trained well enough to subconsciously see these errors. It's not their fault. They learned correctly. The errors we fail to correct stand out to readers as if they are yellow highlighted. Our subconscious mind somehow goes back to check it, fails to let it go, and in the root of our judgement, we tend to bookmark that as either ineptitude or plain sloppiness.

My mother was a health editor for a national magazine. She couldn't help herself when she saw typos, bad grammar, poor spelling, and worse. She'd fume. She'd rant. She couldn't let it go! It was just wrong.

That, I presume, is how we all react when we read obviously unedited work. That is also why its suggested that we edit our work a day after writing it. Or read it aloud. And that goes the same for online writing, whether it is a blog, a tweet, a Facebook post, or a full article for your niche market.

Whether the writer is a paid professional, a business owner, or an employee, whatever they put online needs to be written well enough that the readers get the subtle message of a professional. If they are uncomfortable writing, they serve themselves best by hiring a writer and collaborating on the polishing and editing.

Ah, you know I read (I think you know) but it's not often that I feel I have to say something considerate. ;) I usually take away something from your blog posts, though. :)

Another very clever, timely and very helpful post Andrew. I've recently been trying to work out how to use the blog on my website more effectively and you're proving to be quite an inspiration when it comes to choosing interesting topics to blog about.

I've also recently started commenting on blogs for the first time, so this post really resonated with me (that's the last time I will be mentioning myself, for fearing of coming across as an egotist).

Another point you could try and weave into your seductive theme would be to for commenters to validate their appreciation for the post they are commenting on by retweeting the link and thus 'sharing the love'. Commenters consistently unwilling to alert others to your blog posts are either heartless lotharios or could be revealing obsessive stalker tendencies!

So I'm off to retweet the link to this article immediately!

Yes, yes, yes!! Thank you for saying the obvious that just needed to be said. The writing, I find, isn't what takes the longest; it's the editing, and it just delays the churning out of posts that some feel they are pressured to do, but at least the posts would be more accurate and less jarring to read. Quality over quantity.

I share everything on Twitter because it generates a regular readership. There are people who follow me for my posts. ;)

As for SERPd. I only bothered submitting things I thought would work. Which is why, eventually, I submitted nothing.

Yeah, (niche) social news sites are mostly a disappointment. The obsolete frontpage metaphor leads to voting rings and the communities are too small to outnumber the blatant self promoters. That's why Sphinn and SERPd died over time.
A good way to deal with it is myseocommunity.com
They don't even accept voting and submitted stories get judged based on the number of votes elsewhere (Twitter etc.)
Btw. you made also the mistake of "submitting" all your pages to SERPd and Twitter. Sharing is not submitting. You only share what's worthy of being shared aka only the best content.
